NGI Sargasso at European Research & Innovation Days 2025: Showcasing Transatlantic Next Generation Internet Innovation
The European Research and Innovation Days 2025, the European Commission’s annual flagship event, once again brought together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and members of the public to engage in meaningful dialogue around the future of research and innovation across Europe and beyond. Held this week in Brussels (Belgium) and streamed online, this year’s edition provided a unique platform to discuss how research and innovation can help build a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future.
NGI Sargasso was proudly represented at the event by our partner, the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation (MWCBF), who took part in promoting and disseminating the project's latest results, among them, the NGI Sargasso Innovators Portfolio. As part of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative, NGI Sargasso facilitates transatlantic collaboration between European and USA and Canada-based Internet researchers and innovators, particularly in areas aligned with the values of openness, trust, privacy, and inclusion.
MWCBF’s presence at the event helped reinforce the significance of international cooperation in digital innovation. David Nogales, Innovation Project Manager at Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, shared his reflections on the experience:

Driving Global Impact Through Collaboration: NGI Sargasso and Dynaccurate Launch Cross-Dissemination Partnership
NGI Sargasso is pleased to announce one more strategic collaboration, in this occasion with Dynaccurate SARL, a cutting-edge technology and consulting firm specialised in Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and Knowledge Graphs. This partnership focuses on cross-dissemination and outreach activities that will amplify the impact of both organisations within the transatlantic Next Generation Internet (NGI) ecosystem.
NGI Sargasso is dedicated to fostering a collaborative EU-USA and EU-Canada innovation ecosystem, accelerating technology breakthroughs and contributing to the development of an Internet that prioritizes openness, inclusivity, and user empowerment. Our partnership with Dynaccurate aligns seamlessly with this mission, as we work together to shape a more human-centric and commons-based digital future.
Dynaccurate is the European counterpart of the NGI Sargasso Innovator selected in our Open Call 4 "MDIP: Medications Data Interoperability Project". The Medications Data Interoperability Project intends to provide a ‘single source of truth’ for medications data internationally by using a future-proof data architecture incorporating AI, ontologies and blockchain, enriched by pharmacogenomic data (PGx), to improve patient safety globally. The Canadian partner of this project is Pillcheck Inc, a company providing pharmacogenomic services since 2017, helping individuals and their healthcare providers choose the right medications to feel better sooner.
Their commitment to both proprietary and open-source solutions reflects the open innovation ethos that drives NGI Sargasso. Through this collaboration, NGI Sargasso and Dynaccurate will:
- Jointly promote impactful research and technologies and services on Next Generation Internet.
- Co-develop content to inspire a broader audience of researchers, technologists, and policymakers across the Atlantic.

Dynaccurate: The Future of Clinical Applications
Dynaccurate is a Luxembourg-based technology and consulting company focused on Chemotherapy, Medications Management, Electronic Patient Record, Terminology Management, and AI and Blockchain Consent Management, offering both proprietary and open-source solutions that enable smarter, more interoperable digital systems across sectors.
The team behind it is formed by a group of health informatics experts working on technology that began in a series of campus research projects. Their vision is a world where patient data is accurate, easily managed, and accessible to the clinician, patient and researcher from the same source.

NGI Sargasso and PQ‑REACT: Forging Synergy to Boost Quantum Technologies in Europe and North America
With the aim of amplifying our impact and fostering innovation in digital security and networking, at NGI Sargasso we have forged a new collaboration with another Horizon Europe‑funded initiative: PQ‑REACT, Post Quantum Cryptography Framework for Energy Aware Contexts, a project working on framework design, development, and validation for a faster and smoother transition from classical to post-quantum cryptography.
Since we also boost quantum technologies through three of our NGI Sargasso Innovators, we have embarked on a collaborative outreach and cross‑promotion partnership with PQ-REACT, the latest member of the NGI Sargasso InnoConnect Hub.
PQ‑REACT, coordinated by NCSR Demokritos, focuses on enabling the smooth transition from classical to post‑quantum cryptography (PQC). It provides a migration framework featuring cryptographic agility, validation tools, and pilot demonstrations across domains such as smart grids, 5G networks, and distributed ledger systems.
Recognizing the complementary nature of our objectives, one promoting human‑centric Internet ecosystems and the other safeguarding them against quantum threats, the two projects have formalized a partnership. The collaboration will feature mutual visibility and research dissemination across communication channels, such as the projects' website, newsletters and social media, enabling each project to extend its reach into the other’s stakeholder networks.
This joint effort not only augments the reach and impact of both initiatives but also exemplifies a holistic approach to securing the Internet of tomorrow, advancing both its openness and resilience. By weaving together NGI innovation pathways with quantum‑safe infrastructure, the partnership stands to empower a more inclusive, trustworthy, and future‑proof digital ecosystem across Europe and its Transatlantic partners.

PQ-REACT: Post Quantum Cryptography Framework for Energy Aware Contexts
The PQ-REACT project aims to design, build, and validate a framework for a quicker and more effortless shift from classical to post-quantum cryptography for various contexts and usage domains. This framework will include cryptographic agility techniques, PQC migration paths, and a toolkit for validating post-quantum cryptographic systems, enabling users to switch to post-quantum cryptography while considering their unique circumstances and preferences.
The project’s focus is not merely academic; it aims to tackle the practical complexities involved in transitioning from classical cryptographic systems to quantum-resistant ones. Given the pervasive use of public key cryptography in contemporary digital infrastructure, PQ-REACT seeks to forge a robust pathway for the industry’s shift to post-quantum cryptographic systems. That is why PQ-REACT fosters a series of open calls for SMEs and other stakeholders to bring and test their PQC algorithms and external pilots on the PQ-REACT framework.
Funded by the European Union, a team of 12 distinct but highly experienced organizations form the PQ-REACT consortium in order to address the challenges of post quantum cryptography coordinated by the NCSR Demokritos: Fraunhofer FOKUS, Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Hellenic Mediterranean University, AGH University of Krakow, BDI, Indra, Telefónica, AUSTRALO, Sploro, and SmartLex.

Empowering Digital Inclusion: NGI Sargasso Partners with Simeon
NGI Sargasso is happy to announce a new partnership with Simeon, one of our NGI Sargasso Innovators focused on empowering older adults through trusted digital credentials. This collaboration has been signed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allowing Simeon to become a member of the NGI Sargasso InnoConnect Hub.
Both projects will provide visibility to each other's outreach activities around efforts and contributions to ICT Standards to our extensive network of stakeholder communities and through our main digital outlets. Participation at any webinars or events of mutual interest to keep boosting digital innovation for Next Generation Internet (NGI) technologies and services across continents is also considered as part of the agreement.
By supporting projects like Simeon, NGI Sargasso is enabling practical innovations with meaningful societal impact, helping ensure that the next generation of internet technologies leaves no one behind. Simeon: Facilitating Verifiable Credentials Presentation Across Borders
Simeon, supported under the NGI Sargasso OnCampus Program, is working to make digital services more accessible and secure for seniors by developing verifiable credential solutions tailored to their needs. The project addresses a growing digital divide affecting older populations, who often face challenges in accessing digital services due to complex identity systems, privacy concerns, or a lack of digital literacy. Simeon is a result of the NGI Sargasso Innovator from our Open Call 3 FVCP: Facilitate Verifiable Credentials Presentation across borders, led by Julien Bringer, CEO at Kallistech, and partnered by Identity Woman in Business. Kallistech was previously selected in our first open call with the project D3ICA: Democratizing Decentralized Digital Identity through Cloud Agents, partnered by the Canadian organization Bluink.
This collaboration marks a significant step in advancing NGI Sargasso’s mission to strengthen EU–US–Canada cooperation on technologies that prioritize privacy, inclusivity, and human-centric design. New Partnership between NGI Sargasso and AIPSS: Strengthening the Technological Next Generation Internet Ecosystem
AIPSS, or AI Professional Software Solutions, a Romanian SME that develops Gov-Smart, a cloud-native platform for the digital transformation of municipal services and citizen engagement, is the latest acquisition for the NGI Sargasso InnoConnect Hub.
This Romanian SME, led by Alexandru Panait, its Founder, is the European counterpart of two NGI Sargasso-funded projects, “Trustless Democracy: Decentralized Digital Sovereign Identity and Voting System using Blockchain Technology" and “DES: Decentralized Electronic Signature using Blockchain based Digital Identity”, both contributing practical, human-centric solutions to the Next Generation Internet ecosystem.
Through this new partnership, AIPSS will provide visibility to the outreach activities that NGI Sargasso organizes around efforts and contributions to ICT Standards to its extensive network of stakeholder communities and through its main digital outlets. At the same time, from NGI Sargasso, we will also promote the AIPSS activities, and participate at any webinars or events of mutual interest to keep boosting digital innovation for Next Generation Internet technologies and services across continents. In fact, in June 2024, we already announced that AIPSS created the world's first platform offering public administration as a service, while digitizing public institutions in Romania.

NGI Sargasso Starts a Collaboration with 6G-REFERENCE, the EU Project Developing 6G Hardware Enablers for Cell Free Coherent Communications & Sensing
NGI Sargasso is proud to announce one new member of our InnoConnect Hub: 6G-REFERENCE, the European project developing 6G hardware enablers for cell free coherent communications and sensing in urban areas.
As usual, this collaboration has been signed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in which NGI Sargasso, represented by our coordinator, European Science Foundation (ESF), and 6G-REFERENCE, represented by theirs, Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), will provide visibility and promotion to the outreach activities of both projects around efforts and contributions to ICT Standards to the projects' extensive network of stakeholder communities and main digital channels and outlets. We can also cooperate on joint webinars or any other event of mutual interest to keep building a more digital Europe under the Next Generation Internet (NGI) values of trust, security and inclusion, with a human-centric approach.
6G-REFERENCE: Developing Integrated Circuit and Antenna Component Solutions and Deploying 6G Hardware Enablers
6G-REFERENCE envisions a future where urban areas are equipped with sustainable solutions that can cope with the ever-increasing traffic demands and population densification, while providing disruptive capabilities like the materialization of the internet of sense. 6G-REFERENCE will develop integrated circuit and antenna component solutions, including dynamic frequency filtering and modulated radiation, to enable efficient spectrum coexistence schemes. The project will also deploy practical hardware enablers in terms of low complexity, cost and power consumption that could end up constituting a reference design for future 6G-distributed radios.
Part of the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), 6G-REFERENCE is formed by ten research and industrial partners from eight European countries coordinated by Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC): University of Twente, CEA Leti, imec, ETH Zürich, University of Birmingham, Ericsson, Anteral, AUSTRALO and ACP AG.

The NGI Sargasso Consortium and Innovators Participate in the NGI Forum 2025 to Join Discussions on Digital Sovereignty
The NGI Sargasso consortium attended the NGI Forum 2025, celebrated on the 19th and 20th of June in the Albert Borschette Congress Center of Brussels, the Belgian capital, in an edition focused on Building an Open Internet Stack for European Digital Sovereignty through several insightful talks, panel discussions and success stories of beneficiaries funded by the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative around the need to build a stronger and more sovereign Europe in NGI terms.
The NGI Sargasso coordinator, European Science Foundation, was there, together with our partners Sploro, AUSTRALO and Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation, to join the discussions on Digital Sovereignty, network with the NGI ecosystem and meet some of our NGI Sargasso Innovators who joined this date.
NGI Sargasso attended the talks on Digital Sovereignty at the NGI Forum 2025 and networked with the NGI Community
The Next Generation Internet Forum, or NGI Forum 2025, kicked off with the NGI Commons workshop on "Digital Commons as tools for building Digital Sovereignty", moderated by Monique Calisti, from Martel Innovate, including an incredible lineup of experts tackling one of Europe's most critical challenges:
- Sean Bohan (OpenWallet Foundation) delivering the keynote on digital sovereignty.
- Panel discussion with Denis Roio (Dyne.org foundation), Pascal Steichen (Luxembourg House of Cybersecurity), and Karin Lammers (Independent Consultant).
The conversation highlighted how digital commons can serve as the foundation for Europe's technological independence while maintaining our values of openness and innovation.
A major moment at the NGI Forum 2025 occurred when Thibaut Kleiner, Director at DG CONNECT at the European Commission, delivered a keynote that's setting the strategic direction for Europe's digital future.
"We started the NGI community 10 years ago, the concept, and now next year we'll have projects still running. My message is that we are also at a stage where we need to move on. We need to build on what we have, and to go to the next stage. We want to go from communities to product, and that's why we introduced this concept of Open Internet Stack," said Thibaut Kleiner.
During the panel breaks, and since we consider key collaborating with the Next Generation Internet Community, we always take the opportunity during physical events to meet our stakeholders and sibling projects, to catch up on our activities and to find potential synergies to keep creating an Open Internet. At the NGI Forum 2025 in Brussels, we had the chance to meet with our colleagues from Open Web Search and NGI Search projects, with whom we started collaborative activities after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). In fact, some months ago, in October 2024, we took similar pictures with them at the Open Search Symposium 2024 (OSSYM24).
NGI Sargasso Innovators joined the NGI Forum 2025
Besides attending the inspiring talks, the NGI Sargasso consortium networked with some NGI Sargasso Innovators to learn more about the impactful work they’re doing to shape the future of the Internet.
We met Andrea D'Intino, Co-Founder at Forkbomb BV, partner leading the project DIDroom Uni Credentials, building a use case for digital identity and credentials that is interoperable for universities in Canada/USA and Europe, selected in our Open Call 4.
Benoît Maïsseu and François Chiron, from Werenode, proudly represented their NGI Sargasso-funded project from our Open Call 3 IoTPay, Internet of Things Payment System, aiming to build a secure and interoperable decentralized payment ecosystem for connected objects, reducing fraud, errors, and enhancing efficiency.
More about the NGI Forum 2025: Building an Open Internet Stack for European Digital Sovereignty
The NGI Forum 2025 is the flagship event of the European Commission’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative. It brings together some of Europe’s top Internet innovators at work to build an Internet of Trust, empowering end-users with more choice and control over their data and digital identity.
The 2025 edition focused on the building of an Open Internet Stack as conducive to European digital sovereignty and users’ empowerment. It served as a key platform to bring together innovators, policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders. The Forum provided an opportunity to reflect on major developments in digital sovereignty, open internet infrastructure, and digital commons, while fostering collaboration between diverse stakeholders shaping Europe’s digital future.
The aims of the NGI Forum 2025 were to:
- Promote the NGI vision and its latest advancements
- Engage key stakeholders in meaningful discussions on internet governance, digital innovation, and policy development
- Facilitate networking and collaboration among the NGI community, industry leaders, and policymakers

NGI Sargasso and NGI Enrichers Collaborate to Boost the Next Generation Internet Transatlantic Technologies and Services
A new collaboration agreement, or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), has been sealed, paving the way for future cooperation with NGI Enrichers. The NGI Sargasso coordinator, European Science Foundation (ESF), has signed a new MoU with our sibling project NGI Enrichers, represented by their coordinator GAC.
The NGI Enrichers program supports European NGI researchers and innovators to spend 3-6 months in the USA or Canada to work and collaborate with USA and Canadian hosts, to promote knowledge-sharing and establish long-term collaborations on NGI technologies, services, and standards. This program, aligned with our NGI Sargasso mission of boosting Transatlantic cooperation on Next Generation Internet, provides travel funding, living allowance, and visa for visiting fellows from Europe, and supports both fellows and their hosts, with bootcamps, mentors, visibility, community building and more.
Trough our projects' collaboration, we will provide visibility and promotion for our outreach activities through our main digital outlets.
NGI Enrichers has twelve partners, including a well-balanced mix of competencies, expertise, and access to relevant stakeholder networks across the EU, Canada, and the USA. That is why at NGI Sargasso we are thrilled about this new partnership.

The NGI Enrichers Final Event: AI Horizon 2025 in Davos
On the 24th and 25th of June 2025, NGI Enrichers will have its final conference at the event #AI Horizon 25, Empowering the Next Generation of Internet Researchers, Innovators and Industry Leaders.
During this event, NGI Enrichers will contribute beyond-the-state-of-art to the further development of solution oriented policies and of research topics for the next EU framework program FP10, following the NGI Forum in Brussels on the 19th and 20th of June 2025, in which the NGI Sargasso consortium and some of our innovators will be present.
This NGI Enrichers Final Event, celebrated in Davos Congress Center, aims to provide scientists, university superiors, research managers, policymakers and young entrepreneurs with insights on how to navigate and thrive in a future where Artificial Intelligence is central to the pursuit of knowledge and doing business.

Discover Three Quantum Technologies Inspiring Projects Funded by NGI Sargasso
Last month, on the 20th of May 2025, three NGI Sargasso-funded projects developing quantum related technologies met online in a session organized by the NGI Sargasso consortium to find synergies and connect:
- HPQCSSI: Hybrid Post-Quantum Cryptography Self-Sovereign Identity Stack
- QRISTIN: Quantum Routines In Space-Terrestrial Integrated Networks
- FRQGAN4AD: Federated and Robust Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks for Anomaly Detection in Future Internet
Each of them had ten minutes to introduce themselves and five minutes for questions and discussion.
HPQCSSI: Hybrid Post-Quantum Cryptography Self-Sovereign Identity Stack

Valtteri Lipiäinen, Research Scientist at VTT, represented HPQCSSI, a project from our second open call combining the quantum safe security of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) with the modern digital identity movement of self-sovereign identity (SSI). By integrating the SSI stack with quantum-resistant algorithms, HPQCSSI aims to bridge digital identity solutions between the EU and USA, ensuring long-term security and interoperability.
HPQCSSI is partnered by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and OHIO University (USA).

QRISTIN: Quantum Routines In Space-Terrestrial Integrated Networks
Chiara Vercellino, Researcher at Links Foundation, explained her project from our open call four: QRISTIN.
The QRISTIN project seeks to harness the power of quantum algorithms to tackle intricate combinatorial optimization problems within space terrestrial integrated networks (STINs), specifically focusing on improving resource management and routing strategies.
The QRISTIN project leverages quantum algorithms to address complex combinatorial optimization challenges within STIN. While STIN offers inherent advantages like flexibility and larger bandwidth over terrestrial networks, integrating satellite networks efficiently poses challenges, particularly in developing algorithms for resource management and routing strategies. Quantum computing’s ability to solve hard computational problems complements classical solutions, making it a promising choice.
QRISTIN is partnered by Fondazione LINKS – Leading Innovation & Knowledge for Society (Italy) and QuEra Computing Inc (USA).

FRQGAN4AD: Federated and Robust Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks for Anomaly Detection in Future Internet
Christian Esposito, Associate Professor at Università degli Studi di Salerno, introduced FRQGAN4AD, a project also selected in our fourth open call, devoted to exploiting Quantum Generative AI to improve anomaly detection when analyzing traffic traces to identify attacks in the Next Generation Internet and devise a federated and robust approach to cope with the quantum noise and the large scale of the network under analysis.
Christian and his team of innovators aim to investigate how quantum computing can improve Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and how to have a federated approach to QGAN in large networks that have a wide variety of traffic and are susceptible to a large number of potential attacks.
FRQGAN4AD is partnered by University of Salerno (Italy) and École de Technologie Supérieure de Montréal (Canada).

NGI Sargasso Joins EuroDIG 2025: The European Dialogue on Internet Governance

The 2025 edition of the European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) took place in Strasbourg (France) under the theme: 'Safeguarding Human Rights while Balancing Regulation and Innovation'. The ESF team, represented by Mariette, together with Hélène Schaffner, Bilingual English Administrator, participated on behalf of NGI Sargasso, and they were impressed by the quality and diversity of speakers and discussions.
Mariette and Hélène jumped into conversations about Next Generation Internet (NGI) and Internet Governance, while networked with other participants to explain how our NGI Sargasso Innovators are building an Internet of humans with their projects supported by our cascade funding program. Their discussions on standardization, digital identity, and cybersecurity were notably of great interest for the NGI Sargasso community.
EuroDIG 2025 reaffirmed the essential role of multi-stakeholder dialogue in shaping the future of Internet Governance. The need for robust and forward-looking standardization frameworks –especially concerning NGI– was a recurring theme across sessions, reflecting Europe's commitment to building a secure, interoperable, and rights-respecting digital future.
More about EuroDIG 2025: 'Safeguarding Human Rights while Balancing Regulation and Innovation'
The European Dialogue on Internet Governance (EuroDIG) is an open multi-stakeholder platform to exchange views about the Internet and how it is governed. First organized in 2008 by several organisztions, government representatives and experts, it fosters dialogue and collaboration with the Internet community on public policy for the Internet –culminating in an annual conference that takes place in a different European city every year. EuroDIG ‘Messages’ are prepared and presented to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).
In 2025 EuroDIG took place from May 12 – 14 in Strasbourg (France), hosted by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Luxembourg Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
