NGI Sargasso Newsletter - October 2024: Last Call for Internet Innovators to Join our Final up to €100K Equity-Free Funding Transatlantic Program

Can you believe we already launched the last of our five NGI Sargasso open calls?

In September, the back at school meant for us back at our open calls. In fact, on the 23rd, we launched our Final Open Call 5 that will be accepting applications until the 25th of November 2024. As in our previous open calls, we’re pumped to invite innovators from the European Union, United States, and Canada to team up and shake up the Next Generation Internet!

As usual, we offer two info webinars and matchmaking sessions per call, the second and last happening tomorrow at 16:00 CET / 10:00 CDT, and we kindly invite you to join it. Why?

Because during the session, you will discover how to get up to €100,000 equity-free funding to create an Internet of Trust and find potential partners across the Atlantic.

Besides, the NGI Sargasso team will provide you with:

  1. All the information you need to know to submit a successful application: requirements, applications process, selection criteria, calendar, etc.
  2. The opportunity to meet two of our NGI Sargasso Innovators selected in our previous open calls, to ask them all your questions: Raúl Reinosa Simón from GUARDIAN (Open Call 2) and George Xylomenos from SNDS (Open Call 1).
  3. A dynamic matchmaking session in different virtual rooms to help you find your Transatlantic partner -we only accept team applications EU+US, EU+CA or EU+US+CA.

Don't miss it, and:

At NGI Sargasso we aim to create a space where EU-US, EU-Canada or EU-US-Canada tech breakthroughs can come together by changing the game regarding Next Generation Internet technologies, services, and standards, all while keeping things human-centric on topics such as trust and data sovereignty, digital identity, internet architecture renovation, decentralized technologies, and standards.

So, what’s in it for you if you get picked? Loads of good stuff:

  • Up to €100,000 in funding, no strings attached -for this final call, the total budget available is up to €1.200.000.
  • Mentoring and coaching to help you level up.
  • An up to 9-month Capacity-Building Program to dive deep, but you can choose if you prefer 3 or 6 months, instead of 9.
  • Access to a whole community of NGI - The Next Generation Internet innovators.
  • Matchmaking activities to find your partner or partners across the Atlantic.

This is your last opportunity to innovate across borders and bring your idea to life, since NGI Sargasso won’t launch any more calls! Don’t let it slip away, and:

Also, in case you feel curiosity about the results of our previous Open Call 4, closed last August 2024, 75 game-changers proved that they felt ready to build the next generation Internet for humans, applying from 22 different countries.

The NGI Sargasso events of February and March 2024

Those working in innovation and connectivity know that the annual February event is, without any doubt, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and with it, its startup event, 4YFN. As a project focused on promoting the Transatlantic cooperation for Next Generation Internet (NGI) technologies, NGI Sargasso couldn’t miss this relevant date. We organized our own NGI Sargasso panel to offer our equity-free funding opportunities for Next Generation Internet ideas.

The NGI Sargasso panel at 4YFN 2024

We invited Monique Calisti, NGI - The Next Generation Internet Outreach Office Director, and three of the beneficiaries from our first open call:

  • EvORAN: Jordi Mongay Batalla, from the Warsaw University of Technology, spoke about what lies beyond in Open-RAN network evaluation. He is collaborating with Huobing Herbert Song, from the University of Maryland. Together, they are unraveling the mysteries of EvORAN – the Evaluation of Open-RAN Network Equipment Including Underlying.
  • EBSI-CAN: Lluís Alfons Ariño Martin, Deputy to Manager and Commissioner of Open Gov. and ICT for strategic planning of ICT and resources at Rovira i Virgili University, made us wonder about the potential of EBSI in cross-border credentialing. Lluís, along with Alex Grech and Klaudia Gyorgyi Farkas, from the 3CL Foundation, are exploring in their collaborative project just that with EBSI-CAN: EBSI and Verifiable Credentialing in Canada.
  • D3ICA: Julien Bringer, the CEO of Kallistech, shared the answer to the question ‘How can we democratize digital identity?’ His project, D3ICA: Democratizing Decentralized Digital Identity through Cloud Agents, focuses on diversity, inclusion, usability, and interoperability.

You can read all about our panel we hosted on the 27th of February here. A bit more than a week later, we were welcoming our second open call innovators in their OnCampus Welcome Day, celebrated in the afternoon of the 7th of March. They aboard an innovative Transatlantic journey to unleash the Future of the Internet with us.

These nine projects were selected after closing our second open call with 80 Internet innovators ready to redesign the Internet of the Future for our generations to come:

  1. DPP-CRC: Digital Product Passport for Carbon-Reduced Concrete.
  2. DES: Decentralized Electronic Signature using Blockchain based Digital Identity.
  3. GUARDIAN: Detection and Recovery from Ransomware for Attacks to Data in Motion.
  4. HPQCSSI: Hybrid Post-Quantum Cryptography Self-Sovereign Identity Stack.
  5. Melisseus: Large Language Models as Defensive Honeypots.
  6. RSFA: Rosseta Stone for APIs.
  7. SIDIHub: Sustainable & Interoperable Digital Identity.
  8. Trustless Democracy: Decentralized Digital Sovereign Identity and Voting System using Blockchain Technology.
  9. VeriRecruit: AI-Driven Interview Analysis for Precision Hiring.

The OnCampus Welcome Day for our second open call beneficiaries was our first of many events in March, followed by many others: the NGI Initiative Coordinators Meeting, the EIC Summit 2024 – Research and Innovation Week, Transfiere 2024, the Sploro NGI Cascade Funding Info Webinar, and our NGI Sargasso Open Call 3 Info Webinar and Matchmaking Session I.

As you can see, these past months have been quite busy at NGI Sargasso, but we want to make sure that Internet innovators join us in our mission of shaping a sustainable and human-centric Next Generation Internet!

The NGI Sargasso Brokerage System

At our 4YFN24 panel next week, we will explain to you how NGI Sargasso can help you find your Transatlantic counterpart with our Brokerage System to be able to apply for our open calls to get up to €100,000 equity-free funding.

We do this because we are a unique collaborative ecosystem and program for promoting the Transatlantic cooperation for NGI technologies, which means that we only accept joint applications by teams formed by one entity from Europe and one entity from the US or Canada. We wrote three articles so you can understand this better:

The NGI Sargasso Inspirational Talks

In our December 2023 News Wave, we advanced to you that Mirko Boehm, Community Developer at Linux Foundation Europe, shared with our first open call beneficiaries an inspirational talk as part of the perks of our funding program, to discuss about how they work as a host for Transatlantic open source projects.

The highlights of his talk are gathered in the last article of our today's newsletter, that we hope you enjoy it!

NGI Sargasso Newsletter - December 2023: Tech Innovators are Ready to Shape the Internet of the Future

We can't be happier at NGI Sargasso to say goodbye to 2023 with 79 tech innovators willing to be selected in our funding program to unleash the Internet of the future with a human-centric approach.

Last Monday, the 18th of December 2023, at 17:00h we closed our second open call that had been running for two months -we launched it on the 18th of October as we announced you in our previous newsletter. We were calling for startups, SMEs, Universities and research centres, and NGOs and foundations to join us in our transatlantic journey of creating an Internet of trust. We received 168 open applications, 79 of those in submitted status, coming from 21 Europe and its Associated Countries, besides the US and Canada, to tackle ten Next Generation Internet challenges.

External evaluators will start now the process of carefully reviewing each proposal submitted, and we will announce the final winners in January 2024. Beneficiaries will receive up to €100,000 equity-free funding per project and will start an up to 9-month Capacity Building program including mentoring and coaching services from top mentors.

Since we have to distribute a total of €4.8M in funding, we will launch three more open calls, the third and next one in Spring 2024, with the novelty of accepting applications from the UK, besides Europe and its Associated Countries, the US and Canada, as in our first two calls.

The NGI Sargasso Inspirational Talks

NGI Sargasso first open call innovators at the Inspirational Talk by Dr. Glenn Ricart from our partner US Ignite

In fact, our innovators from the first open call are already completing their Capacity Building program. In October, they had the pleasure to enjoy an Inspirational Talk by Glenn Ricart, Founder and CTO at US Ignite (one of our partners) and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Utah, about how many Internets we should have, including Dr. Ricart's definition of Internet:

“An Internet is a collaboration with the real world interconnecting great minds, incredible datasets (most real-time), and models that both mimic and have rich interactions with reality” – Glenn Ricart.

This week, they also had the opportunity to listen to Mirko Boehm, Community Developer at The Linux Foundation Europe to discover how they work fostering transatlantic cooperative projects. After the talks, our innovators engaged on interesting Q&As and discussions with the guest experts.

The NGI Forum 2023

With our second open call running seeking Internet innovators and our first open call beneficiaries accomplishing their program, at the NGI Sargasso consortium we have been quite busy.

However, we couldn't miss the NGI Forum 2023 celebrated in Brussels on the 15th and 16th of November to meet Europe’s top Internet innovators at work to build an Internet of Trust, empowering end-users with more choice and control over their data and digital identity.

https://youtu.be/HfT2KpLzDjU

We got inspired by hearing many amazing success stories from the NGI - The Next Generation Internet initiative. One of them was the case of our innovator Alex Grech, Executive Director at the University of Malta and NGI Sargasso open call one beneficiary with the project EBSI-CAN: ‘EBSI and verifiable credentialing in Canada’.

Grech participated as a moderator at “PLENARY 2: Shaping Digital Identity and Credentials in the Web 4.0 Era: Empowering and Safeguarding Individuals in the Online World”, a panel that explored whether – and how – three European Commission’s flagship initiatives, the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Regulation, reinforced by the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), and the Next Generation Internet (NGI), could steer technological developments towards social and environmental good.

In this edition of our newsletter we would like to present another not to miss opportunity in this realm: The NGI Enrichers program.

This is a transformative asset within the Next Generation Internet (NGI) ecosystem, providing a unique platform for European innovators and researchers to establish vital international connections. Over the course of 3 to 6 months, fellows can immerse themselves in the innovative climates of the US or Canada, working alongside like-minded professionals to advance NGI technologies, services, and standards. By facilitating these international exchanges, the program not only enhances individual expertise but also fosters a global perspective within the NGI community.

With comprehensive support in the form of travel funding, living allowances, and visa assistance, fellows can focus on creating meaningful relationships and innovative collaborations.
