Project Overview

SafeMode addresses a critical imbalance in the commercial fleet industry: while drivers are continuously monitored through telematics and GPS systems, they typically have little to no access or control over their own data. This lack of transparency often leads to biased performance assessments, reduced trust, and unfair treatment.

To tackle this issue, SafeMode introduces a driver-centric platform that restores data sovereignty, giving drivers access to their performance data while leveraging AI-driven analytics to improve safety and efficiency. The solution shifts fleet management from a surveillance-based model to a transparent, incentive-driven system, where drivers actively engage with their data.

By combining behavioral analytics, gamification, and real-time feedback, SafeMode promotes safer driving habits, reduces operational risks, and supports a more ethical and human-centric approach to digital mobility—fully aligned with NGI principles.

Methods and approaches

Driver-Centric Data Access & Behavioral Analytics Framework

SafeMode developed a system that gives drivers direct access to their telematics data, transforming passive monitoring into active engagement. Through AI-driven analytics, the platform identifies risky driving behaviors and provides real-time coaching and performance insights.

The approach integrates behavioral economics principles, including gamification and incentives, encouraging drivers to improve performance while aligning safety goals with daily operations. This creates a feedback loop where drivers become active participants in fleet optimization.

Integrated Telematics Ecosystem & Scalable Deployment Strategy

The platform was designed to integrate seamlessly with leading telematics and camera-based systems (e.g., Samsara, Geotab, Lytx), enabling real-time data ingestion and cross-platform compatibility.

SafeMode validated its approach through pilot programs with fleet operators in the U.S., supported by ICS, and developed a scalable architecture adaptable to different regulatory environments. Strategic partnerships with insurance providers further enhance the system by linking safety improvements to reduced insurance risk and costs.

Key Achievements

Successful adaptation and deployment of SafeMode technology in the U.S. market, including real-world pilot validation.

Pilot testing with 10+ fleet operators, demonstrating effectiveness in operational environments.

Establishment of key strategic partnerships with ICS and Holmes Murphy to support market entry and scaling.

Demonstrated 71% reduction in critical safety violations through behavioral analytics and driver engagement.

Integration with major telematics and camera-based platforms, enabling interoperability and scalability.

Development of a scalable business model and market entry strategy, supported by targeted outreach and communication campaigns.

Impact & Results

Scientific Impact

SafeMode advances understanding of how AI-driven behavioral analytics can influence driver performance and fleet safety. By applying data science and behavioral economics to real-world fleet operations, the project demonstrates the effectiveness of incentive-based interventions and contributes valuable insights to intelligent mobility systems.

Societal Impact

The project promotes a more transparent and fair digital environment by restoring control of personal data to drivers. This shift improves trust between drivers and fleet operators, enhances working conditions, and supports ethical data practices. Additionally, safer driving behaviors reduce accidents, benefiting both drivers and the broader public.

Economic Impact

SafeMode demonstrates strong economic value by reducing key cost drivers in fleet operations, including accidents, fuel consumption, and insurance premiums. Its integration with telematics ecosystems and partnerships with insurance providers enable scalable deployment, positioning the solution as a transformative tool for modern fleet management.

EU–US Collaboration

The collaboration between SafeMode and ICS enabled effective adaptation of the solution to the U.S. market through joint pilot testing, market insights, and continuous coordination. This partnership strengthens transatlantic innovation in smart mobility and establishes a scalable model for future EU–US cooperation.
